Split Peas in a Pod: Intra-system Uniformity of Super-Earths and Sub-Neptunes

چکیده
The planets within compact multi-planet systems tend to have similar sizes, masses, and orbital period ratios, like "peas in a pod". This pattern was detected when considering with radii between 1 4 $R_\oplus$. However, these same show bimodal radius distribution, few 1.5 2 $R_{\oplus}$. smaller "super-Earths" are consistent being stripped rocky cores, while the larger "sub-Neptunes" likely gaseous H/He envelopes. Given distinct structures, it is worthwhile test for intra-system uniformity separately each category of planets. Here, we find that tendency twice as strong size than combining all together. sub-Neptunes be $1.7^{+0.6}_{-0.3}$ times super-Earths system, corresponding an envelope mass fraction about 2.6% $5\,M_{\oplus}$ planet. For sub-Neptunes, low-metallicity stars found more equal modest statistical significance ($p\sim 0.005$). There also $(\sim$2-$\sigma)$ wider-orbiting larger, even category.

The HD 40307 Planetary System: Super-Earths or Mini-Neptunes?
Three planets with minimum masses less than 10 M⊕ orbit the star HD 40307, suggesting these planets may be rocky. However, with only radial velocity data, it is impossible to determine if these planets are rocky or gaseous. Here we exploit various dynamical features of the system in order to assess the physical properties of the planets. Observations allow for circular orbits, but a numerical i...

In January, Harold Varmus will begin the next stage in an unusual career. He’s gone from English literature to medicine to bench science to Washington science bureaucrat, and now he becomes the well-paid (some would say extremely well-paid) president of a private, not-for-profit treatment and research facility, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He’s succeeded in everything...
متن کاملThe occurrence and mass distribution of close-in super-Earths, Neptunes, and Jupiters.
The questions of how planets form and how common Earth-like planets are can be addressed by measuring the distribution of exoplanet masses and orbital periods. We report the occurrence rate of close-in planets (with orbital periods less than 50 days), based on precise Doppler measurements of 166 Sun-like stars. We measured increasing planet occurrence with decreasing planet mass (M). Extrapolat...
متن کاملThe Formation of Super-Earths and Mini-Neptunes with Giant Impacts
The majority of discovered exoplanetary systems harbour a new class of planets, bodies that are typically several times more massive than the Earth but that orbit their host stars well inside the orbit of Mercury. The origin of these close-in super-Earths and mini-Neptunes is one of the major unanswered questions in planet formation. Unlike the Earth, whose atmosphere contains less than 10−6 of...
متن کاملNuclear Dimorphism: Two Peas in a Pod
The macro- and micronuclei of Tetrahymena reside in the same cytoplasm but are about as different as night and day. This extreme case of nuclear dimorphism can now be partially attributed to differences in the subunit compositions of their nuclear pore complexes.
